Life Lately, In Groups of Three

posted on: Thursday, September 27, 2012

Life's been a bit slow moving lately. Summer's left us and everyone's headed back to school and life's usual responsibilites. I haven't had much to write about, or maybe I just haven't felt much like writing.  Rather, I've been filling my nights with home cooked meals, Adventure Time marathons under blankets on the couch and alphabet writing practice with a certain W-E-S-T-O-N. So, here's a little catch up post about life lately until something more exciting comes along and shakes things up a bit.

Things I've Done Recently:

Made an entire batch of chocolate chip cookie dough. Baked about a dozen cookies then proceeded to eat the all of the remaining frozen cookie dough over the course of the following week.

Learned how to type those emoticons and symbol thingys into texts and emails. Thank you Josh and sorry to everyone else for all the texts consisting of only mini soccer balls, ice cream cones and christmas trees. (P.S. It's officially the christmas quarter!)

Designed stuff. Mostly pool houses (don't ask me) and my own living room.

Things I've Read* Recently:

Middlesex - Interesting, different, engaging but lo-oong. 3 out of 5 stars

The Book Thief - A tear jerker but an easy read. Glad I finally got around to it. 3 out of 5 stars. Had I read this when I was younger I would have probably given it 5 out of 5.

The Night Circus - Haven't finished it yet but so far I'm totally in to it.  Preemptive 5 out of 5 stars but let me know if I'm wrong on this.

*Audiobooks count too, right?

People I've Missed Recently:

My brother Ben (stupid Nashville)

My bestie Adam (stupid Columbus)

My grandma Lil. Her birthday was on the 6th and I had to look it up because I couldn't remember. She would have been 88. I should tell you about her someday because she was one amazing lady.

Things I've Thought Recently:

How is it possible that Bone Thugs-n-Harmony are still together and touring? More importantly, will Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone be there, and are they still singing Crossroads???

Whatever happened to that girl from the Child of Rage video they made you watch in 9th grade health class? And why was that required viewing anyway? Health class was supposed to teach you about nutrition, the birds and the bees and STDs but apparently also about psychotic children who want to murder their whole family?

Why does the baby never have pants on?

Aaaaand that about sums it up. If you're still with me after all that blahblahblah-ness you are a gentleman and a friend, and I thank you for your devotion, sir.

I'll do better next time, promise.

On Life as Their Mother

when bath time lasts a little longer than you'd like and your hair and clothes and bathroom floor are a lot wetter than you'd like because those exuberant little bathtubbers can't be counted on to contain their splashing.

when you can count on the uneven crunch of cheerios underfoot to remind you it's time to vacuum the rug again and you should probably check under the sofa cushions too.

when after two bedtime stories, one cup of water, a trip to the bathroom and at least twenty five very important, can't wait til morning questions, you're asked to stay and snuggle for just two more minutes, pleeeeeease.

when, on your seventeenth month of nursing, you're still getting up at least once, but usually twice a night and stumbling sleepy eyed and disoriented in to the nursery to calm a weepy baby the way only you can.

when, even though you swear you just cleaned that window yesterday, those tiny handprints are right back where they left them before. Maybe even a couple more have been added, just for good measure.

when you know the only way to manage a diaper change these days is to distract a wiggly baby who has no time or patience for such trivial tasks by playing the "I smell your stinky feet" game, complete with gasps, coughing and very dramatic faces.

when you slump through the door, exhausted from the work day and grateful to be home only to find the monsters and dragons and zombies are already there waiting for you, ready to do battle before you've even had a chance to check the mail.

when you know the way to get those dreaded veggies down is best executed with an airplane bite and a little tickling.

when you don't even notice the top of the lungs shrieking and shouting that comes along with playtime anymore but the minute all you can hear is silence, your mama ears perk right up and you know there's trouble afoot.

when you know you're a little less put together than you'd like, your house a little more messy, and when you know you'll likely be tired as far in to the future as you can see. It's okay.

Be grateful for the two more minutes of snuggling, for that sweet nursing baby in your arms and those sticky handprints on the window. Because you get to be their mother.

And that's a pretty sweet gig.

Places I've Found Oren: Part II

posted on: Sunday, September 16, 2012

Hello, dear readers! You may remember a little post I did few weeks back consisting of some pictures I'd snapped here and there showcasing Oren in some of the more precarious situations he finds himself in on a daily basis. Since that post a few of my family members have joined in the fun and have been taking and sending me pictures of our little daredevil when they catch him with his "spirited" side on full display. I put them together here with a few more of my own. I have a feeling this is only part II of a much longer and regrettably ongoing series.  We are so screwed.

You're Welcome

Farewell To Summer

posted on: Thursday, September 13, 2012

Somehow, it's already mid September (what?!) and this hot, sticky summer is finally coming to an end. Pumpkin flavored treats are beginning to pop up in all the coffee shops and bakeries, sweaters are being brought out of storage and I even heard a radio station bidding to be "your non-stop christmas music station this season" (!!!)

I love summer, I do. But I'm ready to see it go. I am so ready for fall. And what, may I ask, could be a better homage to this fading summer than a giant iphone photo collage of Wes eating ice cream? Not much I think, not much at all. So, summer, we bid you farewell and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the ice cream you gave us an excuse to eat.

A Quick Little Hello

wow. once i downloaded this from my little iphone screen on to my computer i discovered just how flattering this photo of myself really is. yeesh. (still better than my new driver's license photo though. somehow it managed to be even worse than the last picture which was taken just 6 days prior to giving birth to wes in all my bloated, puffy, pregnant faced glory. i didn't even know that was possible - positively horrifying. )

hi.....so, it appears I've gone a whole week here with out posting (if you're still even checking this thing, that is). My bad. I will say in my defense, I have been without a computer since it needed to be sent away for repairs and it just came back last night and it's a little difficult to blog without a computer, ya know? Also, I've been a tad pre-occupied since Abby started school and got new job and my brother moved away. I've been having enough sympathy anxiety for the both of them combined. Also, in the exciting arena of dental news (!!!) both Oren and I are cutting teeth at the same time, awwwww. Him: molars, me: wisdom. So no sleep for either of us and an October surgery scheduled for me. I'll let you guess which one of us has been crying more in the last week. (here's a hint - it's a tie). I think I'm the oldest person in the history of the world to just now be having my wisdom teeth removed. I so thought I had dodged this bullet years ago, but apparently not.

Ok, enough with all of that, my quota has been reached on complaining. Starting tomorrow I can hopefully get back to business as usual over here. Meaning, tomorrow, expect mass amounts of pictures of my kids and ice cream. More specifically, my kids eating ice cream. You know how I do.

Labor Day

which, around here is also known as international If You Have A Sibling They Should Probably Move Away day.

boo.

my brother and sister (in law) decided to trounce on our hearts and ruin our holiday weekend by moving away. ben to nashville for a three month long internship and lisa to canada to begin her exciting new life as an ex pat just north of the border. and they both left on the same day.

oh sure, ben will be back in a few months (he better be. i've got my eye on you, nashville) and lisa is only a four hour drive away. but, as one might expect, we like to get real dramatic over this stuff and throw going away pizza parties with cake and way too many ridiculous photos.

put that in your pipe and miss us.
