Books I Read

posted on: Tuesday, December 17, 2013

It's still December over here and I don't know about you guys but all I have to report on is the making of cookies, the trimming of trees and all that typical holiday stuff. Which will most likely be the case for the next couple of weeks still. So to give us all a break from one more photo heavy holiday post I figured I throw in another post on what I've been reading lately. By the way, I use the phrase "reading" loosely as I am wearing out my Audible app and my brand new Kindle (thanks, Ma!) so a lot of this "reading" gets done while driving or folding laundry or other tasks that wouldn't be so easy to manage while holding a regular old paperback. Juuuust in case you were wondering where I get all this extra "reading" time because no, I am not superwoman and I do need to sleep on occasion and feed my children every once and awhile and the last time I checked I still only have 24 hours in my day. So there's that disclaimer, now let's get to it!

(And you're not off the hook for that photo heavy holiday post, so check back tomorrow ;)

I know I already reviewed Divergent and gave it an enthusiatic thumbs up, but I finished the last two in the series since then and they did not disappoint. The ending of Allegiant did not go as I'd hoped but exactly as I'd expected it to. Which was fine. It was still a good ending but the hopeless romantic optomist in me was a little bummed out. Ah well, what can you do? Now I'm just impatiently awaiting the release of the movie. What do we all think of the casting? I'm not so sure about the dude they've got playing Four. Please discuss.

I specifically picked this book to follow the Divergent trilogy because I was ready for something fun and lighthearted. Did you know Maria Semple was one of the writers on Arrested Development? I rest my case.

Ehhhhh, this book. Bleegghhkerguhhh. Just...not my style. Not that it wasn't good. It was. It was actually really good and I never wanted to quit reading it, but the whole thing was just depressing. And you never really like either of the main characters and they seem so goddamned real - like people you'd just want to get away from or scream at or something if this was real life. It was hard hanging out with those two the whole time you're reading this book is what I'm saying. Was that even a review? I don't know, you're on your own with this one.

Polar opposite of Giordano's book. Maybe a little too perfectly sweet, actually. It was short and pretty and hopeful and there was some beautiful imagery but the story was never really developed and it just felt very ficticous to me. I know, I know, but it IS FICTION, Emily. I guess I just like to get attached to the characters in the books I read and Isabel just felt too pretend for that. Apparently, I'm really hard to please. Still, it's a pleasant book and I'd recommend it for an easy read.

This one is a page turner and I loved it VERY much. It's a novel about the life of Ernest Hemingway and his wife, Hadley, told from her perspective and it's made me want to read everything by Hemingway I can get my hands on and also kicked my wanderlust for Paris up about a million notches. This is a good one and I highly recommend it.

So that's what I've been reading. Did you know I've never read Anne of Green Gables? And I sort of think that's crazy and I need to get on that immediately. Thank you, Allie, for reminding me of this. What's next for you guys? Read anything good lately? Let me know and in the mean time I'll be getting to know Anne Shirley ;)

  1. I'm not sure about Four either... I'll have to wait for the movie and see! I think Tris is great casting though.

I've actually never read Anne of Green Gables, but I watched the mini-series on PBS when I was a kid all.the.time (we recorded it on VHS because we were cool back then).

  2. I feel exactly the same about Hemingway :) I think The Paris Wife will be my "holiday break" read!
